Adjusting to Winter Finishing 1/17/2012 10:27:00 AM
Well, it seems like winter is finally arriving – at least here in the Midwest. As I write this, I’m looking out my window waiting for the first “real snow” of the season to start falling. With the mercury finally falling down to more normal winter temperatures, it’s a good time to review Diane Shattuck’s Do’s and Don’ts in Cold Weather.
Diane has some more tips to share this week, although they are not related to the cold weather specifically. In her blog she goes through the
Top 5 Finishing Mistakes of 2011. Many of the mistakes she mentions are issues we discuss every day on FinishingIQ.com. Give it a close read, and then make sure you’re not making any of these mistakes that could be lessening the value of your product.
David Jackson continues on with his primer on
Catalyzed Varnish. He picks up where his last blog left off in explaining the characteristics of this material. He offers tips on how to use the material properly, while explaining some of the chemistry behind what is happening. We’ll be piecing together Parts 1 and 2 into one article which you’ll be able to find in the Knowledge Base under
Materials.
John Howell writes this week about
Glazing to Enhance the Grain. He walks through the benefits of glazing, and when it makes sense to use this technique. Glazing is a great way to make your product stand out against the competition. However, since it is a specialty finish, it is important to make sure you are performing the technique properly. John’s blog offers tips and suggestions on how to achieve the ideal glaze that will really make the wood’s natural beauty shine.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this so far mild winter, because it looks like the real thing might be finally hitting us! Keep that finishing department at the right temperature so your finishes are as beautiful and strong as they are in the spring months!
